Recently I was fortunate enough to spend some time in Mendocino, California where I stayed on a ranch that bordered the Redwood Forest. The horses became a favorite subject for me while painting for the plein air paint-out sponsored by the Mendocino Art Center. This photo I took the morning I was leaving to head home. Once I got home I had to paint it. As I looked into my rear view mirror and saw a painting. I recently visited Mendocino, California for a plein air paint-out, sponsored by the Mendocino Art Center. I was fortunate enough to stay at a local ranch. This is Nico standing in the Redwood Forest as the first light crept into the forest. He looked up the moment the light touched his body as if to see who entered the forest.

I began this painting when I was in California. I was along the trail off Rinaldi Blvd. in Granada Hills, CA. I began this on sight as a plein air painting. After my move to Washington, I dug it out and finished the painting from the photo in my studio.
I remember the warm sunshine and the refreshing shade cast by the old oak tree.
This Tree was in the parking lot behind the warehouse where a group of us painted every Thursday night. We loved to see the tree during the different times of the year and different times of the day. To me, this tree illustrates the ability of life to grow and thrive under any adversity. It was the only living thing in the hot parking lot, there in Nothridge, CA. It pushed through the hot asphalt and grew to house hundreds of birds. In the evening you could hear them chirping their good nights to each other as they settled in for the night. Iverson Ranch is know for the area when movies began to be filmed in California. It is located in the Chatsworth hills in the north west corner of the San Fernando Valley. Hundreds of movies and television shows were filmed in the rocky hills. Memorable movie stars, Ronald Regan, John Wayne and many more walked the dry trails of the Iverson Ranch. Shows such as Virginia, Lone Ranger, Bonanza were filmed in the area. Many of the rocky formations are seen in films from yester-year.
